ABSTRACT

When helping Lean companies introduce the Training Within Industries (TWI) Job Instruction (JI) methodology as a starting point to create a foundation for standardized work, we always are asked, “How did we ever miss this?” Actually, the role of JI in standard work is easy to miss when people have not yet had the opportunity to attend the JI training sessions over a 5-day period, the content of which we will introduce in this book. If TWI had been identified early on, along with all the other Lean tools, perhaps Lean standard work would not currently be classified by the Lean Enterprise Institute as “one of the most powerful but least used lean tools” (www.lean.org/workshops).
