ABSTRACT
Microbial ecology is a science that examines the interactions of microorganisms with the environment, other organisms, and between themselves. An ecosystem comprises biotic (biological) and abiotic (physical, chemical) components that interact with each other; it is isolated from the environment by a boundary (Figure 9.1). An interaction between two elements can also affect the interaction between two other elements.
