Biotechnology deals with the use of microorganisms or their products in large-scale industrial processes. Microbial biotechnology is used in agriculture, the food industry, production of materials, mining, pharmaceutics and medicine, energy production, and the maintenance of a clean and sustainable environment (Figure 17.1).
