Microorganisms live in the hydrosphere (seawater, freshwater, and groundwater), lithosphere (soil), and survive in the atmosphere. The bacterial mass on Earth amounts to 10,000 × 109 metric tons. For comparison, the mass of Homo sapiens (human beings) on Earth is 0.3 × 109 metric tons.
