Prevention of biodeterioration, biocorrosion, and biofouling of the materials that are used in engineering is an important task of environmental microbiology.
Almost all materials can deteriorate due to microbial oxidation-reduction, hydrolysis, and the production of acids, alkali, and oxygen radicals.
