ABSTRACT

Oxidation-reduction is a way of producing biological forms of energy that can be used for all cell activities. Oxidation-reduction is widely used in environmental engineering for the biodegradation of wastes and the bioremediation of the environment.

Oxidation is the loss of electron(s) or hydrogen. Reduction is the gain of electron(s) or hydrogen. Electrons are donated by one compound (the electron donor is oxidized) and are accepted by another compound (the electron acceptor is reduced). Examples of coupled oxidation-reduction reactions are given below.
