ABSTRACT

If, for instance, the subject committed a crime, causing his or her arrest may be the most appropriate strategy for dealing with the individual even though we consider arrest as the most confrontational of all the strategies. In the alternative, an arrest for a minor crime may be held in abeyance by the threat manager during a confrontational interview as a tactic to control future behavior. An arrest can also be delayed until the precise time that would be most effective, such as when the subject would be in the possession of a weapon-or critical evidence. Threat management is not a 1-2-3 approach, nor a by-thebook practice. The essence of good threat management is flexibility and sound judgment.
