ABSTRACT

The chapter presents an example that describes a problem experienced on a moving engine assembly line where the operator had to perform actions both with and against the component movement. The problem was that there were excessive rejects of the spark plug installation due to a damaged gap setting on the installed spark plugs. Most of the damage to the spark plugs was created during the installation into the combustion chamber when the tip of the plug impinged on the engine wall that changed the spark plug gap from the required setting. The chapter provides example that is a short explanation of finding a way to facilitate a reduction in force when certain operations require verification or inspection continually. Sometimes due to dire circumstances or competition, it is necessary to reduce the staff to maintain profitability. This condition occurred at a plant in the midwest where the high cost of maintaining the functioning staff became unworkable.
