Visna-maedi virus (VMV, also known as maedi-visna virus [MVV] or ovine lentivirus) and caprine arthritis-e ncephalitis virus (CAEV) are retroviruses that affect small ruminants (sheep and goats). They are grouped together as small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs), due to their genomic and antigenic similarities [1].
