WEEV strains can be divided into high-virulence and lowvirulence pathotypes following intranasal [11] and subcutaneous [12,13] infection of mice, and these differences correlate with amino acid differences concentrated in the structural genes. It has been hypothesized that epizootics may arise by mutation of avirulent strains circulating enzootically [14].
