ABSTRACT

Biological organisms developed sensory capabilities to enhance their survival. Identifying foods sources, evading predators, enhanced communications, and finding mates are all augmented with more sophisticated methods of perceiving their environment. In the last two centuries, we have developed our own enhanced sensory technologies-x-rays, 3D computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), EEGs, EKGs, high-resolution electron microscopes, genomic sequencers, etc.—to augment our senses to improve healthcare. These diagnostic technologies along with antibiotics, gene therapy, and modern pharmaceuticals have doubled life expectancy in the past century increasing our survival by utilizing our intellects. Modern Homo sapiens emerged approximately 200,000 years ago and only in the last few centuries, utilizing the scientific method, have we begun to be masters of our own fates.
