ABSTRACT

Dogs have been assisting humans with hunting for centuries, but only relatively recently has this aspect of canine assistance been fine-tuned to enhance conservation actions, by assisting in the removal of invasive species from natural environments. The development of detection dogs to assist in the removal of pest species is partly the convergence of two canine functions: firstly, the use of dogs trained to detect rare and protected species (often birds or mammals), and secondly, the use of dogs to assist hunters with locating game animals.
