Fault tree analysis (FTA), failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA), and the Markov method are the examples of methods that can be used in both safety and reliability elds. The FTA method was developed in the early 1960s for analyzing the safety of rocket launch control systems, and FMEA was developed in the early 1950s for analyzing the reliability of engineering systems.
