ABSTRACT

Both forms are meant for either limited numbers or short-duration federation. e material in this chapter covers more permanent or larger federation events.

13.1 Federation Federation is a joining together of interests. In computing, it means an agreement to share information resources. Examples range from two oces sharing data to work on a proposal to two companies sharing marketing and sales. For an enterprise, it is an agreement to allow individuals not in the enterprise access through acceptance of credentials. e simplest way to federate with a small number of individuals is to issue enterprise credentials to them and include them in enterprise databases. Broader sharing requires a more formal denition of federation and its processes. If we examine the steps in federated communications, we see that they are composed of the basic steps in prior forms of communication.
