ABSTRACT

Vitamins and minerals are important micronutrients required in the diet for sustaining health and performance in the child and adolescent athlete. Vitamins are organic compounds that are part of the broad spectrum of essential micronutrients that carry out a multitude of regulatory functions. Alternatively, minerals are inorganic compounds that carry out similar necessary physiological functions, often in synergism with vitamins. This chapter discusses the specic roles of vitamins and minerals as they pertain to the young athlete. In particular, vitamin D, iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc, as these micronutrients have been especially well studied with respect to the target population. Evidence-based conclusions are drawn to provide guidance as to the requirements. Recommendations take into account the unique needs of the young athletic population throughout varying stages of physical development.
