ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the output of selective demolition and state-of-the-art, opportunities and challenges for recycling of the most dominating building and construction materials. It also presents recycling of other materials such as scrap metal, gypsum and mineral wool. Recycling of Construction and Demolition Waste has taken place all through time in human history. Recycling of stones and bricks from old abandoned and destroyed building, particularly war-damaged structures, has always been economical feasible and aesthetically attractive. Recycling of fresh concrete waste is now common practice in most ready-mixed concrete plants. Such wastes may be surplus concrete or rinse water, which has been used to flush and clean mixing plants or transport vehicles. The chapter explains the specific solutions for the establishment of a sustainable and profitable market for recycling of concrete. The key elements are Economy, Quality of materials, Information, and education.
