ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part refers to the fundamentals of capacity management without which hospitals cannot achieve higher levels of performance. Obviously, the need for dramatic change is great and growing rapidly. Implementing the Blocking and Tackling of Capacity Management will mean becoming well prepared for any possible future delivery and reimbursement models. Properly implementing these elements will get facility eighty-plus percent of the way to full capacity optimization, and do so without great expense, time, and frustration. The chapter looks at some point move to a population health operational and reimbursement model, and health ownership is a key goal for those models. This alone should give the impetus to examine levels of optimization and the use of the elements of the Blocking and Tackling of Capacity Management.
