ABSTRACT
There are two principal-but greatly dierent-methods for making radio astron-omy observations: single-dish observations and observations made with multiple telescopes that are combined together using interferometric techniques. In this chapter, we present a thorough discussion of the basic considerations of radio observations made with a single telescope, generally referred to as single-dish observations. Interferometric observing techniques will be discussed in Chapters 5 and 6.
