ABSTRACT

Oxygen Therapy in COPD Patients Long-term oxygen therapy has been shown to reduce mortality in COPD. Patients with COPD who are being considered for long-term oxygen therapy should fi rst be assessed by a specialist (respiratory team, respiratory nurse). They must also stop smoking to reduce the risk of fi re hazards (burns, fi re) and be on oxygen therapy for at least 15 hours a day to see any medical benefi t. It is best delivered with a concentrator, via nasal prongs at 2-4 L/min (depending on the patient’s clinical presentation and ABGs).
