ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the aim and the basic principles of the assessment of visual acuity (VA). It provides a list of equipment required for this assessment. The chapter presents the instructions on the techniques of clinical examinations and methods of undertaking practical procedures. A bullet-pointed, step-by-step walk-through of the key steps for the skill, with specific notation and pearls, are also presented. The assessment of VA provides the Ophthalmologist with an objective measure of visual function. It is simple to measure and provides a repeatable and consistent indication of central acuity. ‘Acuity measurements’ determine the ability of a visual system to differentiate two targets separated by space. Central acuity is generally measured by recognition of optotype charts, although non-literate targets may be used. It is important to recognise that central acuity is only one aspect of visual function.
