ABSTRACT

This chapter provides clinical context of the lacrimal function. It examines how to testing each causative factor and also provides a basic examination of the lacrimal function. The chapter gives an overview on Rose bengal and presents step-by-step procedure for Schirmer’s testing of basal tear production and Schirmer’s testing of reflex tear production. It also presents step-by-step procedure for fluorescein tear tests. The chapter then presents step-by-step procedure for performing syringing of the lacrimal canaliculi. It discusses probing of lacrimal drainage ducts. Dry-eye disease represents a significant proportion of the caseload in eye departments. Dry-eye disease may be due to: tear factors, lid factors, and drainage factors. Assessment of severity is based on symptoms and signs. A thorough examination of the ocular surface should be undertaken, with particular attention paid to any evidence of corneal epithelial disease.
