ABSTRACT

Getting your CCT is just the fi rst part; now you need to think about what sort of GP you want to be.

This chapter aims to explain some of the practicalities involved in getting your next job. However, the fi rst step is thinking about what this dream job would look like. This may well be the fi rst time that you have thought about such things since getting a place on your GP training scheme. So it is worth taking a step back and thinking about what your core values are that would infl uence such a decision. Some people fi nd that easy to do whereas others fi nd such abstract thinking more diffi cult. Breaking it down into thinking about what sort of practice you want to work in can help to stimulate this thought process. However, it is sometimes worth stepping back and trying to understand why you have reached a particular conclusion. There is no right or wrong answer; the skill is in knowing what is the right answer for you, which may look very different from the right answer for one of us or for another of your colleagues. What you conclude will be informed by your personal and family circumstances and your priorities in life, as well as your cultural and religious beliefs.
