ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have focused on the critical understood of ‘personhood’ in perception of the needs of an individual with dementia, particularly in relation to wellbeing. I have also considered how certain types of dementia may bring specifi c issues, including how the physical health of an individual for dementia must be cared for. I then went on to discuss how individuals with dementia might enjoy leisure activities and other activities as part of a healthy lifestyle. The success of such approaches appears to depend on individuals having ‘choice and control’ over decisions that affect them, but the previous chapter considered also, in particular, how independent advocacy services can be helpful for living well with dementia. This is, of course, only part of the story. The rest of the story concerns the environment of that individual, and those closest to him or her.
