ABSTRACT

In most organizations, new strategies begin with programs and projects to support and implement desired changes. Project management is instrumental in effecting change to policies, processes, and procedures within an organization. Project managers are on the forefront of creating and managing change. Adoption of sustainable strategy focuses on identifying a goal and then adopting a series of actions to achieve that sustainability goal. Using the methodologies of program and project management to implement sustainable strategy improves program and project outcomes. The structure and rigor of project management provide a framework through which to engage stakeholders, identify priorities, manage risks, and effectively allocate and manage resources for success. Too often, sustainability projects are either developed or implemented as “feel good” initiatives, without the structure and rigor provided through project management methodology. Sustainability champions who partner with pro ject management professionals within an organization and who use project management methodology to develop standards and protocols are more successful in moving their organization forward on its sustainability journey.
