ABSTRACT
In the last chapter we introduced the four fundamental features that completely describe the types of symmetry for repeating patterns. From now on we shall often specify the symmetries of a pattern just by giving its signature (which lists its features). We haven’t yet said why just these particular features are so fundamental-and we won’t, until Chapter 8-nor have we found just which signatures arise.
