ABSTRACT
The particles of run-of-mine coal may be up to 1 m in diameter when mined in open cast and up to about 30 cm in diameter when mined underground. The coal must be reduced in size before beneficiation. The optimum size is generally determined by float and sink test to assess the size necessary for effective liberation of the coal from any shale particles.
