ABSTRACT

Water is in the news more than ever before and yet, despite journalistic exploration, it remains a topic that is difficult to fully grasp. This is, in part, because water management has moved beyond the purview of the water institutions and regulations of the last century. Today, thorough water management must also include emerging themes such as the water/food/energy nexus, water marketing opportunities, and riparian habitat needs. We need new tools to address the broader format including flexible water management, new organizations to help us integrate stormwater and reclaimed water with other supplies, and more inclusive planning to ensure that natural systems do not bear the brunt of our water management choices.
