ABSTRACT

Video games would only deliver a fraction of their immersive potential with-out the support of audio. Audio alone can transform the aesthetic experience of gameplay by providing an ambient atmosphere for the player’s actions. Audio is a term that covers two principle categories in the context of games: music and sound effects. Music and sound effects are applied to both interactive and noninteractive moments of a video game experience that begins the instant the game is switched on and a start menu is loaded. This chapter, however, focuses on audio that supports gameplay-when players are in control of a video game character.
