ABSTRACT

Policies and procedures must be written in a very clear and concise manner, and directed to the lowest comprehension level of people expected to be present in the facility. Safety and security policies and procedures should be written in a standard format using action words so that the reader can quickly understand what the meaning or intention of the policy or procedure is and be able to assimilate the information easily. Most security and maintenance departments tend to be smaller units whose hard-working members are dispersed throughout the facility during the working day. Policies are guidelines that form the how-to for an organization and present the opportunity for consistency of activity despite the constant turnover of new employees. From a facility owners/operator’s perspective, policies and procedures help to make the facility a safer place in a cost-effective manner. It demonstrates to the occupants that the owner/operator actually cares about the people and assets in the facility.
