ABSTRACT

The presence of uniformed security guards provides more visual deterrence as the uniform suggests authority and professional incident response capability. An effective way to organize the security and incident response system in a facility is to engage the philosophy of deter, detect, and react. Incident response in large facilities begins with building management and security, and the tenants or occupants. Elevators are an essential mechanical system in multistory buildings for the purpose of efficiently moving persons and assets between floors. As emergency codes are generally announced through the fire annunciation system, it must be a topic of conversation with the local fire department officials to ensure that they agree with the interpretation of the fire code that allows the fire annunciation panel to be used in this manner. In facilities where security culture is weak, a change must be introduced to the population and buy-in achieved by facility and security managers.
