ABSTRACT

Accessibility is about removing barriers to services or facilities so that all persons have equal access, freedom of movement, and the dignity of being able to perform basic functions without having to seek assistance. As the developed world moves toward inclusiveness, it just makes complete sense for facility owners/operators to incorporate accessibility into renovation and building plans, even before legislation requires them to do so. Many jurisdictions are already legislating compliance to have barrier-free retail, restaurants, and workplaces to allow persons with physical challenges to participate fully in what society has to offer. Accessibility also means the consideration of effective design in the first place or retrofitting older buildings with accessibility-friendly equipment. Facility managers must keep an eye on the factors and try to communicate with building occupants to reduce this annoying but widespread problem. Public restrooms or washrooms are as much a security issue as they are an accessibility challenge.
