ABSTRACT

A nurse must use the time during his/her management/supervised practice placement to really look at the areas in which he/she is lacking practical knowledge. Try to work with the person in charge of the ward as much as possible to gain experience in how others manage a group or a ward of patients. It is during this placement that the nurse will have the opportunity to consolidate the skills and knowledge he/she has acquired during the training. The nurse will find that most NHS Trusts offer rotational posts for newly qualified nurses. Most drug errors are caused by: he nurse not checking the name band and, therefore, the patient's identity against the drug card; the nurse being interrupted. It is important that the nurse understands the intricacies of staff planning. It is necessary to find out what happens if a member of staff is not performing as they should or is giving cause for concern.
