This will be one of the areas the nurse will be worrying about most. It may be that he/she has not had much experience of drug rounds during his/her training. The nurse will normally need to do a set number of assessed rounds, but if he/she still does not feel confident he/she must tell his/her mentor. This chapter presents examples of the types of criteria the nurse will be required to meet: look after the drug trolley.; ensure that he/she has the correct drug chart; check the prescription; check the chart for indications of allergies; check the container for the name of the drug; and so on. Cannula care is a very important aspect of intravenous therapy. Without a patent cannula, the nurse ill not be able to infuse the prescribed fluids. The cannula must be inspected daily and appropriate action taken if it is not patent.
