ABSTRACT

The nurse must try to make the best of all situations, even if they don't seem very positive at the time – she/he can learn something from every experience. The nurse is surrounded by knowledgeable and supportive people, so draw on this knowledge and experience from all members of the team. To begin with the nurse will be prioritising the care of his/her small group of patients. It gives the nurse the opportunity to socialise with his/her colleagues and talk about topics other than work. It is a good idea to be aware of the global situation and not just the situation of the ward with regard to finances. When you are delegating, always ensure that this is appropriate. It is the nurse's responsibility to ensure that the member of staff to whom you delegate is competent to perform the task. Although they are responsible, you remain accountable.
