ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The previous chapters provide clear evidence of the benefi ts of breastfeeding to mother and baby. A major challenge in contemporary times is that of ‘information overload.’ Women who are considering breastfeeding, as well the healthcare professionals who are aiming to promote and support breastfeeding, may fi nd themselves having to consider a large volume of information. Helping women to untangle the mass of available information on breastfeeding is a major responsibility of the healthcare professional. Furthermore, demonstrating that practice is evidence based is a key aspect of the role of the healthcare professional in providing information and facilitating informed decision making by women that is based on their individual needs and circumstances.
