ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the study of electromagnetic fields and explains how the electric and the magnetic fields evolve with respect to space and time. Maxwell's equations governing these fields are presented and physically interpreted. The electromagnetic wave (EMW) propagation in vacuum and different media like dielectric medium, conductor, and plasma are discussed. The concept of plasma frequency and skin depth is included. The EM wave propagation in plasma under the effect of an external magnetic field, when applied either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation, is illustrated and includes ordinary wave, extraordinary wave, R wave, L wave, magnetosonic wave and Alfven wave.
