ABSTRACT

The metaphor of the Phoenix is a powerful image for leaders to aspire to. Because of its powerful imagery, the word Phoenix is used as both a noun and an adjective. To make the connection between the Phoenix and leadership it is important to first understand the fascinating story of the Phoenix. The Phoenix Leader exemplifies excellence in leadership and is an expert in self-reflection, improvement and innovation. Turnover of senior leadership in healthcare organizations is tremendously high and much of the turnover is not voluntary. Every employee stays in their roles for reasons that advantage them whether it be personal satisfaction, money or a whole host of other personal reasons. Leaders have many personal reasons as well but two of them are personal growth and success. Adopting the Phoenix metaphor as one of continual change and renewal, will provide for the potential for tremendous personal growth through learning. This knowledge can then be applied to the organization.
