ABSTRACT

A leader can accomplish absolutely nothing without the trust and support of their staff and the only way to build that trust is to cultivate effective interpersonal relationships. Trust is extremely difficult to build but extremely easy to lose. Once that bond is broken, it is an uphill battle to rebuild it, if at all possible. The staff needs to believe that you have their best interests at heart. Getting to their hearts however, requires going through their brains by tapping into the science of emotion. This chapter focuses on several important concepts through a scientific lens including emotional (EI) and social intelligence (SI) and the art of communication. Feedback is a critical factor in successful communication techniques. Ignoring a request of a staff member, colleague, or other leader, or delaying a response may send the message that their concern is not important to the manager.
