ABSTRACT

The Neotropical region comprises the tropics of the New World in most of South America, Central America, southern and central Mexico, and the Antilles (Rapoport, 1968; Fittkau, 1969; Cabrera and Willink, 1973; Löwenberg-Neto, 2014; Morrone, 2014b, 2015b). This region was recognized originally by Sclater (1858) and its circumscription in zoogeography was consolidated by Wallace (1876). It has received several alternative names and has been also treated as a kingdom (Engler, 1882; Heilprin, 1887; Lydekker, 1896), subkingdom (Rivas-Martínez and Navarro, 1994), or subregion (Schmidt, 1954).
