ABSTRACT

The Shigeo Shingo Institute is moving away from the term "operational excellence," since that would eliminate consideration of many other key departments such as HR, finance. The Shingo Institute suggests that sustainable key performance indicator (KPI) improvement requires a cultural shift, or the improvement is only temporary. Since the establishment of the Shingo Prize at Utah State University in 1988, the Shingo Institute has assessed organizations in various industries around the world as they've challenged for a Shingo award. Initially, the famous Shingo Prize focused on tools and systems, and how those tools and systems drive results. The most widely used model in the world for the journey to enterprise excellence is called the Shingo Model. The Shingo Prize has become the world's highest standard for enterprise excellence. Most organizations do not wait until they believe they might qualify for the Shingo Prize to challenge.
