ABSTRACT

A map is an abstraction of the landscape that is intended to capture selected relevant features, thereby enabling its users to better navigate the mapped landscape. The landscape may be as tangible as that for some physical geography, or less so, as in the case of enterprise strategy (Burton and Pennotti, 2003). Selection of those features considered relevant by the mapmaker, omission of other features, and understanding of both are critical to the efficacy of a given map.
