ABSTRACT

Geotechnical engineering is the branch of engineering dealing with building with, in, or on soils and rocks. It relies on the science of geomechanics and other branches of science, precedent, standards, and codes. Different parts of the world use different systems of units. Except for the United States, countries use the International System of Units (SI). The system of units used in the United States is the United States Customary System (USCS). Geotechnical engineers may work as consultants or as specialty contractors, dealing with either design or execution of projects. They may organize businesses as LLCs, corporations, or other corporate forms and must meet a standard of due care in their engineering work.
