ABSTRACT
This chapter combines the content of Chapters 9 and 10 into a design framework for shallow foundations. The design framework encompasses serviceability and ultimate limit states and is illustrated using many examples of footings in sands and clays. Ultimate limit states associated with damage to the superstructure, bearing capacity failure, and general stability failure are covered.
