ABSTRACT

Piles can be installed in many different ways. On one extreme, nondisplacement piles are installed by the removal of soil and then placement of concrete or grout in the space created in the ground. Displacement piles are forced into the ground by driving or jacking. Continuous flight auger (CFA) piles, also known as augercast piles, and other piles lie between these two extremes. The classical nondisplacement pile is the bored pile or drilled shaft. These piles can be installed using the dry, casing, or slurry methods, all covered in detail in this chapter. This chapter also discusses the equipment necessary to drill, jack or drive piles into the ground.
