ABSTRACT

Site investigation is required for designing foundations, slopes, and retaining structures. Site investigation can be done in many different ways: collecting samples for laboratory tests, performing geophysical tests, or performing invasive tests. The most common invasive tests, the cone penetration test (CPT) and the standard penetration test (SPT), are discussed in detail. Interpretation of these tests for soil state and the relationship between cone resistance and SPT blow count are also covered.
