ABSTRACT

Photosynthesis is the most important biophysical process taking place on Earth. Photosynthesis is one of the oldest and best studied areas of the biological sciences. Historical reviews are fascinating and turn up many surprising facts, such as major advances made by church ministers and scientists in the middle of war. The global distribution of human solar energy use is presently an entirely different matter than photosynthetic activity. Wikipedia, in which several photosynthesis articles have been cowritten by J. Govindjee and Larry Orr also has credible discussions and links. The quantum model of light and matter accurately explains the interaction of electromagnetic waves with atoms and molecules. From a purely strategic point of view, a photosynthetic organism should be able to adjust to high and low levels of light. There may be times during which sunlight is too intense and would cause too many photon absorptions and too many energy transfers to reaction centers.
