ABSTRACT

The two words “character” and “design” define the two most important aspects of the tasks of a character designer. The two aspects of character and design have to be equally and thoroughly covered in order to produce a believable and fully rounded character that convinces on every level. Obviously, both elements strongly relate to each other and cannot exist on their own. Character design is a significant part of the visual development process for film and games, and also one that is the most difficult and misleading. It is not just the act of drawing the character, but creating the character based on a specific story. The final design needs to please on many different levels. Additionally, it needs to be engaging to the general public so they can easily submit to the escapism of the film. Character design is not just a temporary job, but a job that one wants to perform for a couple of decades.
