ABSTRACT

Contrast is described as “the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association.” Color contrast is what gives the relationship between the miscellaneous colors tension and separates them from each other, which is the very point of color contrast: to show that one color is different from another. Low contrast in saturation makes the colors separate less and their otherness is often not significant enough to make them stand out. High contrast in saturation makes the saturated colors stand out and step forward in significance, whereas the desaturated ones step back. Colors with high luminance attract attention and with low luminance step backwards. Color contrast is important at any stage of the image-making process and needs to be considered at all times when using colors in their complex relationships.
