ABSTRACT

Variation in visuals with colors and shapes, in editing, in motion and sound, all aspects benefit from variation. Variation in each part broadens the options dramatically and allows us to shift between styles but also makes the outcome look more organic, if that is what is wanted or needed for the narrative. In a storyboard, if the same composition is repeated over and over again, the audience very quickly gets bored and loses interest in the story; if the mood is the same, the color the same, the form of the architecture or the furnishing of the set repetitious, then the piece lacks originality and the audience will lose visual interest. To avoid this and provide the director and art director with the widest range of possibilities in the development process, variation is one element that is crucial and serves as a very helpful tool to expand on one’s own designs.
