ABSTRACT

Directions deal with the overall orientation of the image and its imbedded or suggested movement. Directions are not to be confused with vectors. Where a vector is part of the image, a compositional aid to point towards the focal point and assist the reading of the image in its details, the direction is the overall movement in the frame, assisted often by the orientation of the frame itself: horizontal or vertical. Directions in cinema are limited to a horizontal orientation, of course; nevertheless, there can be other directions in the overall content of the frame. The direction of the frame in animation is usually already determined, as the action happens in a horizontal cinematic aspect ratio, which always will have an emphasis on the horizontal orientation, left to right or vice versa.
